When we first saw the cover of Hugh Laurie’s latest album, Didn’t It Rain, we couldn’t quite believe it. Is that a…Schoenhut piano he’s using? Yes, it is!
Contrary to the elegant nature of the album cover, the album features the gritty, heartrending sounds that hail from New Orleans. Laurie has been fascinated by the music of NOLA since his childhood. This album is a great tribute to artists past and present.
From his official website, “I have resolved to forge on, deeper into the forest of American music that has enchanted me since I was a small boy,” explains Laurie. “And the further I go, the more bewitched I become – both by the songs and by the people I have been lucky enough to play them with.”
The album cover itself is a quiet reflection of Laurie’s work as a comedian/actor and as an accomplished musician. His bended knees reaching over the top of the piano and his long fingers perched on top of the keys bring a tangible lightness to the professional look of his coattails.
With his feet in the puddles and his back hunched over his toy piano, he is the perfect image of a man who has not lost sight of his childhood creativity.
